All you need to know about Faber-Castell PITT Artist pens

13th May 2019

It is hard to know how a pen will perform from seeing images of it online. To help with choosing the most suitable pen for your needs we have put together a little breakdown of Faber-Castell PITT Artists pens stocked here at Artway.

Faber-Castell PITT Artists pens are made to combine the advantages of ink drawings with the benefits of a modern, easy to use fibre-tipped pen. All of the Pitt pens use pigmented Indian ink, which is acid-free, pH neutral and has a maximum grade of lightfastness - meaning your work won’t fade over time. The pens are lightweight, practical and a comfortable choice for artists, designers, illustrators and doodlers alike. Whether you are a beginner or a professional the Faber-Castell PITT Artists pens are a quality addition to any pencil case.

India ink Pitt Artist Pen - Brush (B)

  • Pigmented India ink
  • High lightfastness
  • Flexible brush tip - retains its shape
  • Waterproof, permanent
  • Odourless, acid-free, pH neutral

A great all-round pen with easy transition from thinner to thicker strokes through downward pressure on the nib. Great for calligraphy and hand-lettering as well as sketching, layouts and illustration. Paired with the PITT Artist Fineliners (XS, F, M) the brush pen works well for covering larger spaces and creating thicker lines.

India ink Pitt Artist Pen - Soft Brush (SB)

  • Pigmented India ink
  • High lightfastness
  • Waterproof, permanent
  • Odourless, acid-free, pH neutral
  • Tip size SB = very soft brush tip

Super flexible tip to achieve extra thick marks (twice as thick as the Brush). You can achieve a variety of lines with the Soft Brush, but due to the super flexible nib, a higher level of brush control is required to do so. If you prefer a looser style of drawing the Soft Brush or Brush pens are well suited to you.

India ink pen Pitt Artist Pen - Soft Chisel (SC)

  • Pigmented India ink
  • High lightfastness
  • Waterproof, permanent
  • Odourless, acid-free, pH neutral
  • Does not bleed through paper
  • Nib size SC = soft chisel nib

Much like the Calligraphy nib this pen has a chiselled edged but on a slight angle. The tip performs in a similar way to the soft brush in flexibility being able to create a variety of line thicknesses in a single stroke. Well suited to hand lettering and calligraphy it combines the flexibility of a brush nib but with the structure of a calligraphy nib.

India ink Pitt Artist Pen - Calligraphy (C)

  • Pigmented India ink
  • High lightfastness
  • Waterproof, permanent
  • Odourless, acid-free, pH neutral
  • Nib size C = calligraphy 2.5 mm
  • Ideal for calligraphic work

The 2.5mm flat chisel-edged nib works great for any calligraphy based project. The nib is much firmer than the other fibre nibs in the Pitt Artists range, with little to no flex when applying pressure to achieve precise straight lines. The firmer nib requires a consistent soft and steady approach to produce smooth regular results.

  • Pigmented drawing ink
  • High light resistance
  • Water-resistant, permanent
  • Odour-free, acid-free, pH neutral

F (0.5mm)

Great for general use. The nib is small enough to create detailed drawings but also thick enough to give solid weighted lines, with a strong nib which won’t buckle under drawing pressure. It is a good staple pen for any artist or designers pencil case

XS (0.1mm)

Perfect for achieving super fine detailed drawings with a super strong nib which won't buckle under drawing pressure. A great partner to the fine (F) pen.

Best results from the Faber-Castell PITT Artists pen range are achieved with smoother papers like the Artway Graphic Pad; working on a paper with a rougher texture could damage the fibre nibs, making them fray and therefore leave you with fuzzy lines. More absorbant papers will seriously reduce the life of the pen as they draw considerably larger quantities of ink from the pens tip. Faber-Castell also advises to store them horizontally to stop the ink collecting at the bottom of the pen.
