Questions we get asked

What is cartridge paper?

A drawing paper with a light texture, enough tooth to hold pencil, charcoal and pastel, but smooth enough for clean lines in pen and ink. It's the everyday paper for sketching, studies and design work.

What weight of cartridge paper do I need?

170gsm is a good all-rounder for drawing and sketching. Go up to 240gsm mixed media paper if you'll add ink washes or watercolour, and use the 135gsm roll for dry media and large-scale drawing.

STUDIO or ENVIRO cartridge paper?

Both are 170gsm with a light surface texture, and they draw the same. STUDIO is a brighter white. ENVIRO is fully recycled and made in the UK, with a slightly creamier tone.

Can I use watercolour on cartridge paper?

A light wash, yes, especially if you stretch the paper first: wet it, tape it flat to a board and let it dry. For heavier washes, watercolour paper holds more water.

Can I try the paper before buying a pack?

Yes. Our A5 paper and card sample pack has a sheet each of STUDIO and ENVIRO cartridge, the 240gsm mixed media paper, and our card, watercolour and cotton rag papers.
