A3 is 297 × 420mm, twice the area of A4 and the size you move up to when A4 starts to feel cramped. It's the standard for life drawing, studio work you plan to frame, and portfolio pieces at foundation and degree level.
The trade-off is portability. A3 won't fit a bag made for A4, and a spiral-bound A3 is awkward to work on standing up. Many people carry an A5 sketchbook on location and work up to A3 in the studio.
The range runs from 130gsm softbacks for rough work to the 300gsm STUDIO '35' watercolour book, with 170gsm cartridge, 240gsm mixed media and 270gsm black card in between, across our STUDIO and recycled ENVIRO ranges.
