Fixative spray, a pencil case and the small tools that make drawing easier: clips to hold your paper flat, compasses for clean circles and paper stumps for blending charcoal and pastel.
Our fixative spray stops charcoal, pastel and graphite smudging, and because it's reworkable you can fix a layer and keep drawing on top.
It holds loose charcoal, pastel, chalk and graphite on the paper, so the drawing doesn't smudge when it's handled, stored or framed. Ours is reworkable, acid free and doesn't yellow.
Work outside or by an open window. Hold the can 20 to 30cm from the drawing and build up several thin coats, letting each one dry before the next. One heavy coat can pool and darken soft pastel. Our guide to reworkable and permanent fixative goes into more detail.
Not always. Graphite holds on better than charcoal, but a light coat is worth it on detailed or heavily worked drawings, where graphite can smudge and shine. Coloured pencil rarely needs it.
We don't carry a big choice of pencil cases. The one we stock is the Eco Eco Super Strong, 230 x 125mm, long enough for full-length pencils with room for an eraser and sharpener. For paper and loose work there are clear mesh bags and S-Tuff bags in A4 and A3.
