Questions we get asked

Watercolour pans or tubes?

Pans are dry cakes of paint you wake up with a wet brush. They're compact, quick to set up and waste very little, which is why most travel sets use them. Full pans hold about twice as much as half pans and take a bigger brush. Tubes hold soft paint you squeeze onto a palette, which makes it easier to mix a lot of one colour for big washes.

What does high pigment watercolour mean?

More pigment in each pan, so colours come out stronger and a pan goes further. The paint is thicker, so it takes a little more water and brushwork to lift the colour at first.

Can I refill my watercolour set?

Yes. Our packs of 12 spare white half pans drop straight into Artway tins and most standard half pan palettes, so you can top up the colour you use for highlights and tints.

What paper should I use with watercolour?

Heavy watercolour paper, which holds water without buckling. Cartridge paper will cockle under a wash, though it's fine for quick sketches with very little water.
